 Cozy sweaters for fall

Judith Bond (L) and Susan Austin prepare a clothing display at Baxter's Row Fashion

The brilliant colours of fall and warm, cozy sweaters are what you'll find at Baxter's Row Fashion in downtown Kincardine.

Owned and operated by Susan Austin, the business focuses on casual clothing for women, as well as novelty items, evening and formal wear, accessories and jewellery.

"We like the exclusivity for formal wear," says Austin. "If you've purchased a special dress for an event, you should be the only one wearing it."

Baxter's carries a variety of clothing lines, with the emphasis on Canadian designers, such as Frank Lyman. Also available are Group JS Boutique dresses and formal wear, Fresh FX fancy tops and pants, Martoni cashmere coats which are made in Canada, and Ellabee, a casual coat line out of Montreal.

The fall colours feature brilliant purple and fuschia, and cosy sweaters, vests and blouses are the order of the day. Check out the wide array of belts and purses, and the vast assortment of jewellery much of which is made by local artists.

Walk into Baxter's Lakeview Boutique and you'll find beautiful cruise wear for that special trip to a tropical clime.

Right now, the store has a summer clearance sale, offering up to 50% off, and if you purchase two or more items, you save the tax. And remember to check out Baxter's famous Bargain Basement where clothing is up to 75% off, and no tax if you purchase two or more items.

The store also offers a "Frequent Buyer" program. You collect points on the purchase of each regularly-priced item and once you reach $500, you receive a $50 gift certificate toward your next purchase.

"Tourists enjoy coming in here because we have such a unique store," says Austin. "We provide excellent quality clothing at reasonable prices, and good service." She credits the top-notch customer service to her staff which includes Judith Bond, Jane Willich, Darlene Clifford and student Kerri Adams.

Formerly owned by Bev Spence, the store was named after Baxter Road in the Barbados where Spence enjoyed shopping.

"It's a good name and we have good clientele, so we kept it," says Austin. "But we've created our own style to jazz things up. When I go to the fashion show in Toronto, in the spring and fall, I check out the Canadian designers and make my selections from certain lines."

So, check out the beautiful and unique clothing, available at Baxter's Row Fashion at 740 Queen St., Kincardine. Open Monday to Wednesday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Thursday and Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m.
