What do I need to carry around to feel Ok?

Keith Reynolds

(continued)

On a walk with our dog today, I noticed that she carried herself quite confidently while she held a stick in her mouth.  It got me thinking about all the different sticks I like to carry to make me feel better about things.  Maybe that is true for you too.

Mary Jo Leddy tells a moving story about a man who came as a refugee to Canada and would not let go of his briefcase.  Wherever he went, whatever he did, the briefcase always went with him.  When asked if he would like to store it in a safe place, he refused to part with it.

Eventually one day, someone asked him what he had in it that was so important.  He said, “Nothing.  I just like having it with me.”

How much do we carry around with us simply because we like the security of it?  The thing may serve no purpose other than giving us the sense we have something to hold on to.  Maybe for you and me it is some thing:  a cell phone, blackberry, wallet, keys or money.  Something we can have that helps us feel better about ourselves.

Or is it some position we hold, some place in our community or role we have in our family that gives us the sense that, “I am doing just fine thank you very much.”  Meanwhile, we barely hold it together inside.

Shedding is an ongoing practice in life.  What do I need to let go of?  How can I set this down?  Do I need this in order to feel okay?

Here's hoping for a lighter journey.
