Deep Blue Sky... Chantry
Sources close to the Chantry Island Restoration site, have confirmed
that the Island was vandalized earlier this week.
Apparently, three youths paddled to the Island in a canoe-type vessel
and, after breaking into a gardening tool shed, proceeded to vandalize
the outer buildings with a pick-axe.
This is the first occurrence of its kind since the Propeller Club and
Marine Heritage Society of Southampton undertook the massive renovation,
working only with volunteer help from the community. Damage was done to
the original and restored privy and the recently completed boathouse
which houses the handcrafted Lap Strake boat, the Royal Andrew, built by
local resident, Bob Trelford.
They did not gain access to the Lighthouse or the Keeper's Quarters due
to the steel security window coverings installed by the Propeller Club
as a safety precaution. The youths are apparently known to police,
however, this has not been confirmed by local police.
