Township not extending leases for Poplar Beach cottages
By Liz Dadson

Despite an E-mail letter and intervention by Grey-Bruce-Owen Sound MPP Bill Murdoch, Huron-Kinloss council will not extend the leases for cottages on Poplar Beach.

At the Nov. 17 meeting, staff said the township has also received an E-mail message urging Huron-Kinloss to stand firm in its decision to allow the leases to expire Sept. 25, 2010. Those residents wrote to council in the summer, expressing their concern over what they feel is the environmental impact of the cottages on the leased land along the lakeshore.

"I believe we should stay the course," said councillor Jim Hanna.

Administrator Mary Rose Walden said a reply has been sent to Murdoch, noting that the township appreciates his comments but will not be extending the leases.
