Saugeen Shores council has approved a recommendation to award to Omega Contractors Inc. the contract for construction of the storm sewers for the Concession 10 storm sewer project, in the amount of $1,291,546.27.

In committee-of-the-whole July 28, engineering services director Dave Burnside said the tender included use of cheaper aluminized steel pipe, as well as standard reinforced concrete pipe for the project. Ultimately, despite the higher price of $123,697.20, staff is recommending the concrete pipe option because it has internal strength, is corrosion resistant, is produced in Ontario, and provides more economic stimulus because it is labour intensive.

Omega's bid was the lowest of seven; with the others being Elgin Construction, $1,422,884.75; Cedarwell Excavating Ltd., $1,465,970.41; Tedescon Infrastructure Ltd., $1,474,420; SMRS Construction, $1,555,094.34; Brantford Engineering and Construction, $1,578,000; and Harold Sutherland Construction Ltd., $1,624,147.

This project will allow additional storm sewer capacity to be utilized by Lord Elgin Estates Developments Limited, said Burnside. Based on the tender, the estimated cost of Lord Elgin's capacity is $203,000. The town is negotiating an agreement with the company for its cost-sharing.

The sewer project received two-thirds funding from the federal and provincial governments, but only up to the $1.21 million estimated cost, said mayor Mike Smith. The remainder will be picked up by the town in its one-third share of the project or the town does not go ahead with the work, he said
