The Federal Government has announced a new fund - the Southern Ontario Development Program that funds up to 50% of a grant application with the remaining 50% to be paid by the applicant.

In April, Saugeen Shores Town Council approved a loan of $102,000 to the Marine Heritage Society for the purchase of a new boat with the loan being paid back over a ten-year term. The organization operates summer tours to Chantry Island Lighthouse and, until now, have been using the refurbished rescue boat, the three crew and nine-passenger Peerless.

The Society now feels that the Peerless is of an age that it should be retired and a new boat acquired to continue the tours that have become a major tourist attraction. The new boat would be a aluminum craft and would remain owned by the town but maintained by the Marine Heritage Society.

Now, with the announcement of the new government funding program, the town has applied on behalf of the Marine Heritage Society for the grant and, if the funding comes through, the loan will be reduced by 50%.
