Town Council: Sending a message to Queen's Park

In the Province of Ontario post-secondary institutions and hospitals do not pay property taxes to municipalities.  Instead they pay a fixed amount that is set by the provincial government on each student (head) or patient (bed).

The amount was set at $75 per head/bed and has not changed since 1987.

At Saugeen Shores Council meeting on October 6th, a motion was brought forward from the City of Kingston asking the province to increase the rate to $126.35, to keep in line with inflation.

The 'head' payment would, in fact make the amount equivalent to the taxes that would be collected if the properties were taxable by the community.

"I think this sends a message to the Province," said Deputy Mayor, Doug Freiburger, "and perhaps we should be drafting something like this for the National Park that we have."

Despite efforts by the City of Kingston to affect a change in the rate, it has had no positive response from the Province.
