Town grants permission for CAW Labour Day Parade

Saugeen Shores council has granted permission to the CAW to hold its annual Labour Day Parade on Sept. 7, beginning at 11 a.m. from Home Hardware, south on Goderich Street to Peirson Avenue and east to the soccer field.

Following the parade, participants will proceed to the CAW Family Education Centre by bus and car which will be lined up on Bricker Street from Peirson Street.

Goderich Street will be closed during the parade and traffic diverted as follows: southbound traffic will travel west on Mary Street to Waterloo and then south to James Street and east to Goderich Street; northbound traffic will travel west on James Street to Waterloo and then north to Mary Street and east to Goderich Street.

The CAW will obtain a police escort for the parade and has asked that public works staff put up and take down barricades - a service that has been done in the past and the CAW billed for this service.

Public works director Bill Jones will contact the Ontario Ministry of Transportation for permission to temporarily close Goderich Street for the parade and advise applicable agencies of the closure.

In other business ...

*The town has purchased a new 2010 International 7600 Tandem combination plow and sander unit from Viking Cives Limited at a cost of $199.958. It should arrive before December.
*Council will support the development of an Olympic Torch Committee to co-ordinate the lead-up and arrival day of the Olympic Torch in Saugeen Shores, scheduled for Monday, Dec. 28, 2009. Also, $6,000 has been allocated toward the Torch Run day and events leading up to it.
*The town will send $250 in support toward Haldimand County Disaster Relief.
