Organizers of the Tiverton Reunion will be pouring Labatt's beer out
of the cans and into plastic cups throughout the weekend, set for
July 31 to Aug. 3.
In an update to Kincardine council last night, councillor Randy
Roppel gave few details about the recommendations from the Alcohol
and Gaming Commission of Ontario. However, after the meeting, he
told reporters that the commission made four recommendations which
the reunion committee must follow under its special occasion permit.
"We will have to pour cans (of beer) into soft-sided plastic
glasses," he said, noting that all beverages, including soft drinks,
will be poured into plastic glasses or sold in plastic bottles. "So,
we're pouring the beer from cans; we can live with that."
Roppel said the remaining recommendations from the commission
included: age limits; patrons allowed only five drink tickets at a
time, and after 11 p.m. only one ticket at a time; and minors not
allowed in the licensed area.
He said the municipality originally approved a motion, allowing the
committee to serve the beer in cans, with plastic glasses available.
"But the commission has ruled that's not acceptable and we have to
abide by their rules and regulations." (next column)

When questioned why cans are a problem now when the committee said
earlier there was no problem, Roppel refused to speculate on that.
Kincardine council approved the beer supplier as Labatt's, based on the
emphasis on the ease of dispensing.
"For now, we hope everyone will come to the reunion, enjoy themselves,
have a safe time and make it a memorable occasion," he said.
Roppel said the committee has not yet heard back from the OPP about the
number of officers who will provide security at the event. It has
already hired a private security company.
"We're ready to go," he said. "Our headquarters is up and running (in
the old medical clinic beside Daisy Mart), and we hope to have the phone
connected soon. Check the website (tivertonreunion.ca) for details."
During the council meeting, councillor Marsha Leggett said the
garbage-can painting contest is closed. The committee was hoping to have
10 cans painted, and has already handed out 18 cans, including one to
the residents of Tiverton Park Manor. The cans are to be completed and
back to Patti Hutton by July 20 for judging.
