Handler Constable Andy Stewart explains Titan's training

After several months of recuperating from surgery to his broken leg, Saugeen Shores Police special officer, K-9 Titan, will be retiring. The veterinarian looking after Titan's recovery indicated that he will not be able to return to active duty. Titan is such a worker and is trained so well that if police tried to use him for any type of tracking, Titan would not stop. Even if he started to feel pain, he would continue to work hard for his handler, PC Andy Stewart, until he finished his track. This alone would cause pain and further injury to Titan and Saugeen Shores Police are not going to put him in that position.

Titan will retire with his handler Andy Stewart.  Approximately $4000. was spent in Titan's recovery. The Saugeen Shores Police Association, mainly spearheaded by PC Tracey Bookham-Smith, initiated fundraising and the monies raised will cover the cost of the care Titan received.

On another front, the Force is now looking to do more fundraising to raise the $7000 needed for the purchase of another K-9.  The Saugeen Shores Police recognize how valuable a K-9 unit is for the community. The K-9 unit is used to search for lost people, people committing crimes and leaving the scene, escaped prisoners and as a deterrent. The investment is minimal when compared to the benefit that a K-9 brings.

Donations are much appreciated and can be made through the Town of Saugeen Shores.  The Police Services is also  working on several fundraising ideas you will hear about shortly.
