Gone are the days when you could keep a second fridge in the garage
or cottage with no heat.
New fridges, with a separate freezer compartment, do not operate
correctly in a space where the room temperature falls below 55 Farenheit
or 13 Celsius.
In older models, the thermostat was in the freezer but, now however, it
is located in the fridge compartment. This means that, when the room
temperature drops below 55F, the thermostat senses it is cold enough in
the fridge and so it does not turn on the compressor. When the
compressor doesn't run, the freezer temperature begins to rise and
begins to thaw while the fridge section will be the same as the outside
air temperature.

Many cottage owners have reported leaving their freezers full of
food, expecting it to remain frozen, which given the above scenario
doesn't happen. When they return, the entire freezer stock is thawed
and ruined. In addition, there are those 'snowbirds' heading south who
do the same thing in an unheated garage.
This does not occur with a regular 'chest' type freezer and, now, there
is a specifically designed fridge for unheated areas, manufactured by
Frigidaire, that is an all-fridge with an extra heater to keep the
temperature in the correct range.
