The Southampton Art Gallery celebrated the 'Year of the Light'
exhibition with a gala opening Friday, July 31st.
It was a full-house at the Gallery to view the exhibit that is a
collaborative effort in recognition of the 150th anniversary of
Chantry Island Lighthouse. The unique feature of the exhibit is the
unusual lighthouse-shaped art display of 150 six-inch square
individual artworks in a wide range of media created by some 150
regional artists.
The individual artworks reflect the marine heritage, landscapes and
ornithology that also honour Chantry's official designation as a
Federal Migratory Bird Sanctuary.
At the gala, there were five prizes, totalling $500, awarded to the
top five artists for their work: 1st prize $150 to Dawson Urbanek
for his Lighthouse of Joy; 2nd prize $125 to Hermina Fleet for her
canvas Soulful Bench; 3rd prize $100 to Elizabeth Arnold's 'Summer
in Saugeen' tapestry; 4th prize of $75 to Gail Douglass for her
photograph 'Escape' and 5th prize (children's) $50 to Isabella
Stevens for 'Blue Jay in the Sand'.
The exhibit runs seven days a week during the month of August and
artists can still participate by purchasing pre-numbered, blank
canvas at the Southampton Art GallerScott y. Registration is $10 for
each canvas and anyone can take part.
With organic wines from Frog Pond winery in the Niagara region, the
evening gala was sponsored by Krista Gill and Scott Saunders of
Re/Max Land Exchange Ltd. Brokerage of Southampton.
The entire exhibit will remain into September for viewing and
visitors are invited to vote for their selection of the special
People's Choice Award that will be decided at the end of the show. (next column)
