The Snow Removal  is on Budget

Cleaning up before the next one

Despite what seems like more snow than usual, Saugeen Shores snow removal budget is on target.

According to Bill Jones, Director of Public Works, "We are right on track. We generally budget approximately $500,000 from December 31st to January 1st each year and, thanks to a very efficient system, we've stayed within that goal."

Unlike other communities, explains Jones, Saugeen Shores is fortunate to have its own gravel pits to make sand. "We also use the lowest possible rate of road salt," he points out. "It's just enough to make the roads safe while reducing the impact on the environment. In that regard, we are looking at using an all natural product next year that is made from beet juice."

Beets apparently are a wonder root when combined with salt and calcium chloride in a combination that drops the freezing temperature of liquid on pavement. As a result, it also lessens the corrosive affect on vehicles.

Another cost effective measure is that, with a staff of approximately 25 for winter maintenance, most of the work is done by the town rather than contracting it out. "The only time we utilize private businesses, is after a very heavy snowfall when we have to cart the snow away. Then, we use local truckers to help out," says Jones.
