Tender  Awarded for Wastewater Treatment

Town Council

(continued)

A tender has been awarded for the wastewater system upgrades, Inlet Works Building at the Port Elgin Wastewater Treatment Plant on Lehnen Street (close to dog park).

Wellington Construction was the Low Bid at the Tender opening and a recommendation will be presented to Council on August 24th to award the work.

Council approved going forward for a tender in January under the new infrastructure program established by the Federal and Provincial governments.

Dave Burnside, head of engineering for the town, said in January that the project had, in fact, been planned for several years ago and that everyone on the sewage system would "share in the cost".

The upgrades will see a grit removal building that will provide initial treatment of sewage by removing extraneous material in the wastewater and is also expected to reduce odour problems near the facility. In addition, a septage receiving station is to be part of the design, particularly for rural residents. According to Burnside, "Land application for septage will become heavily restricted or prohibited by provincial regulations anticipated in 2010."
