Saugeen Shores council has approved a recommendation to award to Harold Sutherland Construction the Gore Drain Trail project, at a cost of $69,000, constructing the trail from the 4th Concession to the north side of Holiday Golf Club.

In committee-of-the-whole July 28, community services director Mike Myatt told council that this project received federal and provincial funding through the Recreation Infrastructure Canada program, and will complete Phase 2, linking the Gore Drain Trail to Bruce County Road 25 (CAW Road).

Cost of the project was estimated at $45,000, so the extra $15,000 will come from the parks and trails capital reserve, said Myatt.

Sutherland's was the lowest of three bids; the others were Snyder Contracting, $73,750; and Ackert Construction, $99,900.

Myatt said the work should begin with two weeks.
"Will this link to MacGregor Point Park?" asked councillor Diane Huber. "A group of students is finishing the MacGregor Park trail to connect to the Gore Drain. In order to go right from MacGregor Park to the lights at Southampton, the only piece missing is at Highway 21, east of the 6th Concession, to the rail trail.

"You can get there from the Wal-Mart parking lot," said Myatt.
