Survey begins for sewers north of the Saugeen

Town Council

(continued)

Surveying for the contentious sewer installation in Southampton  has begun.

Surveyors are busy at work trying to complete the surveys required prior to the proposed installation of sewers on the north side of the Saugeen River in Southampton on Lake Huron.

The project has been a contentious issue with many residents in the area opposed to the installation. Two public meetings hosted by the Town were attended by more than 500 residents who expressed a variety of concerns, including the fear of high-density development once a sewer system is installed.

In addition, many have recently installed upgraded septic systems which, if the sewers go ahead, will become redundant and the residents will then have to comply with the sewers at a substantial cost for each individual homeowner.

While many are against the proposed project, there are also those who are in agreement with it based on environmental concerns.

According to the surveyors, the task of accurate surveying is very difficult given the winding roads in the area and the wide range of lot sizes and shapes but given that government support funding has been based on a completion date of March, 2011, they are trying to complete the surveying as quickly as possible.
