If this incredible Victorian dollhouse looks familiar, maybe
it’s because you’ve seen it in the window at Meridian Credit
Union in Port Elgin.
This historic, miniature replica was exquisitely handcrafted by
David Plowright of Kincardine, before having a debilitating
stroke four years ago. He has since had to give up his hobby but
has generously donated this beautiful piece to the "Go Eugenie
Go" fundraising campaign. In David's words:
"I wanted to build a dollhouse for some time. Kay bought me a
kit for Christmas. I did it and wanted to do my own house not a
kit. I sent for a plan and got started. The result you know. I
wanted to try lathe turning and I found want I wanted to do on
the lathe. I read about Eugenie and thought you could get
something out of the house."
David can be reached at 519-396-8802 and has his own
inspirational story. He is an amazingly determined man, whose
character is not unlike Eugenie's.
Eugenie is a seven-year-old girl, with Cerebral Palsy, who lives
in Southampton . She cannot walk or talk, but over the past
three years has made incredible progress by attending Conductive
Education (CE) sessions at Ability Camp in Picton, Ontario with
her Mom, Angela Richard.
Unfortunately, the cost to attend camp sessions is prohibitive,
running upwards of $1000 per week, and not covered by any
government funding. So every year, Eugenie and her Mom fundraise
to be able to continue these CE sessions at Ability Camp.
In order to raise awareness and raise the funds necessary, the
idea of selling raffle tickets for the dollhouse seemed like a
good plan. Again, unfortunately, regulations of the Alcohol &
Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) do not allow service clubs
to raise money through lotteries for "individual persons",
regardless of the need. (next column)

Therefore, the only thing we can do is accept ballots
for the draw, with or without a donation. If you are inclined to support
a worthy cause, all donations are gratefully accepted! It is difficult
to put a value on the dollhouse, as countless hours of painstaking
effort have gone into the details of this magnificent piece that comes
complete with furniture and working lights! A true labour of love. Who
will be the lucky winner?! Ballot/Donation boxes are available at local
merchants (Bayberry's, Rona, Southampton Market, Miller Insurance,
Harrigan's Red & White to name a few) in Saugeen Shores. Southampton
Rotary will be collecting the ballots and donations, and the draw will
be held March 31st, 2009.
Port Elgin Rotary has also opened a trust account, at Meridian Credit
Union in Port Elgin, for Eugenie's continued therapy . If you would like
to receive a charitable tax donation receipt (for donations of $10 or
more) from Port Elgin Rotary, simply visit one of the friendly tellers
at Meridian and give them your name and address with your deposit.
Alternatively you can make your cheque payable to "Ability Camp for
Eugenie" and mail to Southampton Rotary Club, PO Box 1651 Southampton
Ontario, N0H 2L0. For more information, or if you have a business or
suitable location for a donation box and would like to get involved,
please contact Angela at 797-1935 or Henry Weichert at 797-1388. You can
also visit Eugenie’s website to find out more about her and her
adventures at -
www.goeugeniego.com or www.saugeentimes.com (Search - Eugenie) for
more stories.
