A simple decision about renaming a portion of Campbell Avenue
in the Municipality of Kincardine was seriously derailed last
night (Feb. 18, 2009) as discussion picked up from where it left
off the previous week.
At the Feb. 11 meeting, numerous residents of Campbell Avenue,
north of Russell Street, objected to having their street renamed
McGaw Drive, as has been proposed for the section south of
Russell Street.
A petition against the renaming, signed by the residents who
live at Russell Meadows on Campbell Avenue, was presented to
council and residents of McGaw Drive were on hand to argue that
their street should remain as McGaw for the 10 households
located there, some as long as 20 years.
On February 18, in committee-of-the-whole, councillor Kenneth
Craig suggested leaving it as Campbell Avenue north of Russell
Street, but changing the name to McGaw Drive south of Russell
Street.
The municipality already has areas where there are two different
names on either side of a major artery, such as Willow Street
and Elgin Street on either side of Kincardine Avenue, and Huron
Terrace becoming Penetangore Row at the south end.
Councillor Gordon Campbell said it is good planning to have one
name for the whole street, so, it should be Campbell Avenue from
north of Russell right down to Scott Street, through the new
subdivision. (next column)

"If the new principle for 911 street naming is to upset
the least number of residents, then south of Russell should be changed
to McGaw," said deputy mayor Laura Haight, who was chairing the meeting
in the absence of the mayor. A motion to change the
entire street to Campbell Avenue was defeated. The committee agreed that
the north end of Campbell should remain unchanged.
However, when asked about the section of Campbell Avenue south of
Russell Street, councillors Ron Hewitt, Randy Roppel and Campbell said
it should be named Campbell Avenue, while Haight and councillors Mike
Leggett, Marsha Leggett and Craig said it should be McGaw Drive.
Councillor Guy Anderson could not decide whether to go with McGaw or to
just leave the street the way it is, with the new portion as Campbell
and the old portion as McGaw. If the latter were not possible, he was
fine to go with McGaw from Russell to Scott Street.
"That's the recommendation that will go to council at the next meeting
March 4 and, perhaps, the mayor can sort it all out," said Haight.
