St. Andrew's Congregation Celebrates 157 years in Southampton

St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Southampton will celebrate its 157th Anniversary on Sunday September 21, 2008 at 10:30 a.m.

Formed on August 5, 1851, St. Andrew's is the oldest congregation in Southampton. Originally, services were held in a log home where the post office is now located. A second Presbyterian Congregation, established in May, 1852, met in church on Clarendon Street, overlooking the river. In 1863 the two congregations united, with Rev. Andrew Tolmie as their minister. They met in the Clarendon Street church until a new church was built on the current site in 1877.

In looking toward the future, St. Andrew's has made a commitment to raise awareness of environmental stewardship. Special guest speakers at the anniversary service, Andy and Barbara Burgess, will share their experiences working in New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Barbara and Andy were members of a presbytery mission team that helped people affected by the hurricane rebuild their homes and lives.

Anniversary celebrations will continue following the service with a '100 mile luncheon' St. Andrew's Green will provide a delicious lunch of locally grown produce at a cost of $5.00 per person. Contact 519 797 2258 for further information
