Southampton Rotary Report 2008

Southampton Rotary wrapped up 2008 with a wonderful Christmas dinner prepared by Mary Ellen Harrigan. The club received a Christmas card from its foster child Jeffery, giving news of his family and his progress in school. Rotary has supported him for several years and has provided supplies and furniture for his school. Several Rotarians packed Christmas food hampers for needy families and also provided thirty turkeys to go in the hampers. Once again the Christmas decorations shone brightly at Rotary Perkins Park, greeting visitors as they entered Southampton during the holiday season.

The club received a thank you card from the Southampton Care Centre for providing flowers to the residents on special occasions. Jeff Moser attended a meeting and received a cheque to provide computer software for G.C. Huston School. Jeff reported on the improvements that students have achieved in Provincial testing.

Several Rotarians are helping to prepare for Winterama which will take place on February 7th. Proceeds from this fund raiser go to the United Way and the Children’s Hospital of Western Ontario.

During the past few months members have enjoyed hearing from several interesting speakers. Steve and Mickey Smith told of the development of Smith’s Apple Orchards, a local success story. Kathryn Forsyth, a dietician with Grey Bruce Health, advised members on how to eat healthy over the Christmas season. Our first meeting in January will reveal how we did!

Two of our newest members spoke to the club about their history. Arlene Letheren told how  the Knowles family helped develop tourism in Southampton and told of her interesting experiences in Northern Ontario.

She has returned to Southampton where her children and grandchildren visit. She loves to be called Nannie. Tony Sheard came to Saugeen Shores from Yorkshire, England and joined the many people working in the power industry at the Bruce.

Both new members have pitched in and helped at our many fund raisers and we look forward to their help in 2009.

As you can see Southampton Rotary is an active and interesting Club that makes many valuable contributions to the community. We welcome new members who can furtherour good work in the new year.
