The Southampton Residents Association is an organization consisting of 350 citizens who focus on ratepayers concerns and issues of importance.

The organization has a board of directors elected by the membership consisting of well known  members of the community.  Current chairman is Rod McLeod prominent lawyer and long time Southampton home owner, First Vice President Ken Robertson, recently retired Hamilton Police Chief and Vice President Lorne Shantz.

Organization:

  • Year round and seasonal residents
  • Volunteer, not for profit with an elected board.a

Mission:

  • To address ratepayers concerns at all levels of government
  • To protect the unique nature of the community
  • To promote appropriate planning and development

Goals:

  • To preservation of pristine beaches and quality of water.
  • To monitor Municipal taxes, budgets, planning and development
  • To provide for winter patrol of members homes.
  • To support local business.

Current Active Projects:

  • Garbage collection, blue box issues and landfill capacity.

  • Traffic issues

  • Highway 21 and Rail Trail crossing

  • Land preservation between Port Elgin and Southampton.

  • Water purity and beach preservation.

The SRA acts through multiple submissions to Mayor, Town Council and Staff via letters and contacts both personally and to Town Committees and open sessions where allowed.

Recent and Current Efforts Accomplishments

  • Comprehensive submissions to the Saugeen Shores Official Plan.

  • Submissions on protections to beaches, storm water control, dunes and water quality.  These were aided by an independent study by Lake Huron expert Geoff Peach of the Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation.

  • Successful lobbying for the hiring of a  By-Law Officer

  • Successful lobbying for implementation of development charges over many years.

  • Current lobbying for changes in the Provincial Market Value Assessment process.

  • Fundraising for worthwhile community projects.

  • Continuing to lobby for better traffic planning.

  • Working for open and continual dialog with the Mayor Town Council and Staff
