Southampton ER concerns continue

September 1st is fast approaching and so is the planned 'evening closings' date for the Southampton Emergency Room (ER), the second busiest ER in Bruce Grey County next to Owen Sound Hospital.

The ER was slated to close September 1st during evening and night hours, until a 'hue and cry' was raised by the community, lead by the Southampton Residents Association (SRA). The SRA has been working behind the scenes in an attempt to help form the opinion of those in decision making positions, including the Grey Bruce Health Unit and the Provincial Ministry of Health.

While little has been said publicly about any decision regarding the potential closure, it appears that much has been taking place in negotiations 'behind the scenes'.

The situation may have reached some resolution given that MPP Carol Mitchell is to make an official announcement Saturday, August 29th at the Southampton Memorial Hospital.

Mayor Mike Smith said that, "There are still some issues to be resolved but we are very optimistic that there will be good news."
