Sounds of Spring

(continued)

I was in Toronto last week and someone asked me, “What's new in Southampton this time of year?”  Without pausing to consider my response I said, “The sounds.”  He looked at me strangely and then asked what I meant.

There is something beyond words that happens for me during the spring.  I first notice it when the ice breaks up off the lake.  The wind blows and what was silent for months now reveals its sound:  waves on the lake.  The rhythmic rush of water upon the shoreline is one of the most beautiful sounds in our area.

Then there are the birds.  What a gift to wake up to the sound of birds singing to each other.  I can't say that my early morning sounds are always ones full of melodious song, but the birds are singing regardless of what I might bring to a day.

I am captivated by sound this time of year.  The sound of waves and birds, the voices of neighbours talking to each other, the laughter of children in the street and even the humming of cars along highway 21 points to the changing seasons as we welcome people to this area.  I'm trying to listen more these days to what might be attempting to tell me something.  How about you?
