Signs of Our Lives

A couple of weeks ago, I
paddled our kayak out to Chantry Island. From the shoreline the
water appeared to be relatively calm with a slight breeze from
the south. It had been a while since I had been out and was
looking forward to being on the water.
The farther I paddled into the lake, I began to notice the wind was a great deal stronger than it appeared from the shoreline. Whitecaps crested the water, bringing waves over the bow of the kayak. I paddled with more focus and eventually made it near to the island when I began to turn my gaze back toward the shoreline. As I turned the kayak around, I noticed the waves increasing and the wind picking up in gusts. 30/09/2009 09:11 PM |
I felt confident that I would get
back to the shore but how long it would take remained unclear. The
water was before me and stories of sailors' respect for Lake Huron's
strength began to fill my mind. What was I thinking? I've been thinking about this paddle over the last while and have asked myself, “did I look for signs?” “What did I miss?” “Was there something telling me to try a different direction from my original plan?” Life can lead us into ways that challenge us and take us to places we wouldn't normally go ourselves. Sometimes this can be a gift. Sometimes there are signs which tell us to let go of our plans, expectations or assumptions. Life is a mystery. In a way, I'm glad I got a little wet that day. How about you…what are you noticing about the signs of your life these days
