Volunteers from Port Elgin Meridian (L.to R.) Erin Eno, Erin Zorzi, Janice Finley, Daphne Hammar, Julie Vanhaelemeesch The annual Rotary Winterama was a success again this year thanks to community support. Erin Zorzi, President of Port Elgin Rotary said it best when she summed up the weekend's activities. "It is just amazing how our communities support this." The fundraising challenge between the Saugeen Shores Winterhawks and the Shallow Lake Crushers has already set a contest in motion for next year. This year however, saw the Crushers 'crush' the Winterhawks with over $1,300 raised as opposed to the $800 raised by the Saugeen Shores team. Through a variety of activities including skating, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling, pledges so far tally over $33,000 raised with more expected after the final snowmobile runs next weekend. The monies go to support children's programs in Bruce Grey and for United Way causes. |

Marcel Legault and daughter, Andrea, take part in the skate-a-thon In Port Elgin, the number one fundraiser was Marcel Legault of Legault's Indpendent Grocers who raised $1,700 in one day through a free-grocery draw at his store. As first-place fundraiser Legault received four Blue-Jay tickets which he then auctioned off for $100 to add to his total. "Another fundraiser," says Zorzi, "is the 'Kids Helping Kids' movement in the schools. Of the money raised by students, 20% goes directly back to the school with the other 80% going entirely to kid's programs selected by Rotary and the United Way in Bruce Grey. It's a wonderful example of how kids want to be involved in helping each other."
