Rotary Club Donates $1000 to Rail Trail

Joyce Scammell (L), accepts donation from Peter Harrison & Erin Zorzi

In the spirit of Christmas giving, the Port Elgin Rotary Club donated $1,000 to the Saugeen Rail Trail on Tuesday.

The Rotary organization has, like many others, given more donations this Christmas season than ever. "It's amazing," says Rotarian, Michael Crossling. "We generally try to collect $1,000 for instance to provide eight gift baskets to the Food Bank. This year, we collected $1,400 and that was just around around the luncheon table at a meeting."

Joyce Scammell, who accepted the donation on behalf of the Rail Trail, expressed the same sentiments. Scammell, who is also a coordinator with the Good Samaritan's Christmas Child Shoe Box program said that donations this year across Canada, and in this region of South Bruce had exploded. "We received more donations than we ever have in the past. It has been incredible."

Apparently, donations are up in almost every sector despite the reported economic downturn.
