Over the past several months, Saugeen Shores Olympic Torch Relay
Committee has been actively involved in organizing a wide variety of
events and activities that will lead up to the arrival of the Olympic
Torch on December 28th at 5:01 p.m.
This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the Olympic flame on its
longest domestic route in Olympic history. The torch will travel 45,000
kilometers through 1,037 communities while crossing Canada to arrive
back in Vancouver at the 2010 Olympics on February 12.
To date, the organizing committee has organized several initiatives
leading up to the arrival of the Torch:
The Chamber of Commerce is encouraging merchants to decorate store
fronts in red and white to promote community pride
December 16 has been designated as Red & White dress-up day
There will be displays pertaining to Olympic history set up at the Bruce
County Museum in Southampton
The Committee has working with all media sources to promote this special
occasion
Port Elgin Library is providing crafts for children that focus on the
torch's arrival
Arrangements were made to have Olympian Kimberly Ribble-Orr, a 2000
Olympic Games judo team member, speak to local students
A writing competition for elementary school students is being unveiled
at a high-school assembly
Olympic mini flags have been purchased for distribution to all children
in Saugeen Shores
A local fun run/walk, the Reindeer Romp, will take place Sunday,
December at 9:00 a.m. to follow the Torch route in Saugeen Shores
Spectators and viewers in the two Santa Claus parades are being
encouraged to wear red mitts
Red 'Olympic' mitts will be sold during the two shoppers' night, Nov. 13
in Port Elgin & Nov. 19 in Southampton and at both parades
Immediately after the torch leaves Southampton on December 28, a
celebration is being planned to take place at The Plex in Port Elgin.
There will be an on-ice show, including BMX biking on ice, many fun
family activities and also the opportunity to meet the torch bearers.
