The Probus Club of Saugeen Shores celebrated the 20th
anniversary of its founding Tuesday, February 3rd.
In attendance were 11 Charter Members of the original founding
group, each of whom received a 20 year certificate.

certification to President Gordon Boyd on behalf or Probus
Canada.
The Probus Club in Canada has 200 active clubs with 22,864
members and the Club in Saugeen Shores is the 5th oldest. Probus
is an acronym for the combination of Professional and Business
and was first started in the 1920s in Saskatchewan and in New
Haven, Connecticut. Today, there are over 300,000 members and
approximately 4,000 clubs worldwide.
Each Probus Club is non-sectarian and non-political and meets at
least once a month as a social gathering and also to hear guest
speakers. Worldwide, however, they are not service
organizations, although most members are largely active
volunteers in their communities. In fact, they take pride in the
fact that they are independnent and free from the
responsiblities of a service club.
At the recent 20th anniverary meeting, guest speakers were Ross
Birkinshaw of the Bruce County Astronomy Club and Deborah Diebel
of the Outdoor Education Centre (OEC). They discussed the North
Bruce Dark Sky region, the OEC that is west of Wiarton and the
new facilities that are available to students and adults
interested in the study of astronomy.
The Probus Club also held a curling bonspiel January 23rd with
32 members from Saugeen Shores and Kincardine participating. A
return visit to Kincardine is planned for February 9th. (next column)
