The Point Clark Lighthouse will be 150 years old this summer and Huron-Bruce MP Ben Lobb was on hand Monday morning with some federal funds to help Huron-Kinloss put on a celebration. On behalf of the Honourable James Moore, minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, Lobb presented $20,300 to township mayor Mitch Twolan and the Friends of the Lighthouse. "The Point Clark Lighthouse is a timeless treasure in the community," said Lobb. "I am proud that our government is supporting the 150th anniversary celebration." The event is slated for Aug. 14-16, with entertainment, food, a car show, and a special church service, all under the tent at the base of the lighthouse. Meanwhile, Lobb is looking into what Parks Canada is doing to fix the lighthouse because the surface is lifting and pieces of it are falling to the ground. "We noticed the falling rock in early spring," said Stacey Courtney, tour guide co-ordinator. The municipality put up fencing around the lighthouse and installed canopies over the lighthouse doorway and over the entrance to the oil shed beside it. With safety measures in place, people can still tour the lighthouse, climbing the 114 steps to the top, said Courtney. The lighthouse and adjacent museum (located in the lightkeeper's cottage) are open every day, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the last tour going up at 4:30 p.m. Cost is $5/adult, $3/child under age 16, and $15/family. 20/07/2009 11:12 PM
