Inez and Don Fenton, who were for the former owners, had taken their
farm and turned it into a golf course fashioned after the courses found
in Scotland. Wednesday evening, friends and course members were invited
for the official handover to new owners, Rod and Sandy Rice of Brampton.
"Our family is involved in property management and development," Rod
Rice explained, "and we have a summer place at Red Bay. When we first
looked at the property it was in the middle of winter and everything was
under snow but, what we saw, was a great piece of land."
The family company, that operates under the name Redhawk Inc., has begun
developing 'lifestyle' communities aimed at more mid-income families.
"Golf has never been a core with us but we bought and developed Wilmot
Creek in Bowmanville and put in a par-3, nine-hole golf course where the
residents structured the timetable. We see Piper's Glen developing
along the same lines with residential units surrounding the golf
course."
Rice added that, "We see this as a long-term project with the golf
course continuing for many years. We want it to become viable and
profitable and a course where existing members will continue to be
members." (next column)

The Rices have endeavoured to maintain a working
relationship with the Fentons and the golf pro and manager, Glen Massey
and 2nd year Golf Course Superintendent Evan Martin, in order to
"...preserve continuity."
According to Rice, the family company tries to maintain open lines of
communication. "We look forward to keeping everyone advised of any
changes, particularly existing members who have a 'stakeholder'
interest. As development takes place, we will sit down with people for
input and also work with the municipality when it comes to making
development changes."
Member, Jim McKnight, pointed out that he would like to see membership
at the course grow. "Perhaps, prior to sign-up time in April, a notice
could be sent out to members and potential members regarding changes."
Rice agreed with the suggestion saying that, "Communication is very
important with the users of our amenities. We hope to at least double
the membership and then continue to grow. We also welcome any
suggestions and, subject to budget constraints, we can go from there.
This is our most aggressive foray into a 'golf lifestyle community' and
we want to install a management team that, hopefully, will be in place
for next year."
