If and when there are major upgrades on certain Saugeen Shores streets/
roads, paved bike lanes may become part of those improvements.
The Parks and Trails Advisory committee put the idea forward to council
at its March 9th meeting. The alternative method of transportation was
part of the 2004 Parks and Trails Master Plan for some of the streets
and roads where there are no shoulders, curbs or gutters.
It's also been shown that the paved lanes held reduce erosion, long-term
maintenance costs and the potential for single vehicle accidents.
To date, there are seven roads/streets that have been recommended for
the new lanes: (next column)

- CAW Road (Bruce County Jurisdiction) from Hwy 21 to the Beach
- Market Street: Goderich Street to the Beach
- South Street: Hwy. 21 to the Beach
- Peel Street: Laird Lane to the Beach
- 10th Concession: Saugeen Rail Trail to Lake Huron
- Miramichi Road: Southampton to Concession #1
- North Shore Road: Port Elgin to Concession #10
The committee also recommended that a letter be sent to Bruce
County requesting that bike/pedestrian lanes also be introduced into
their road construction plan and that County Road 25 be considered
as high priority.
Although there will be additional capital cost at the time of road
reconstruction, town staff feel this is an opportunity to take a
lead in providing safe Active Transportation routes for both
residents and visitors. As a result, when the seven recommended
routes are being considered, paved bike lanes will also be included
in the costs.
