Nothing in Return

Even after all this time Hafiz, a fourteenth century poet from Iran wrote these words that continue to ground me in the wonder of creation. Spring has a way about it that calls me to notice, to pay attention. Look around you. Look below you. Did you see that? Did you hear that? An abundance reveals itself before my very eyes. This being human takes us to places we would rather not go ourselves. To a place that expects unrealistic things from another person. It can lead us to resentment and bitterness. “After all I have done for you, this is what you give me!” 05/05/2009 03:33 PM |
The sun never says to the earth,
“you owe me.” Look what happens. Look what happens when I live in such a way that honours another person's freedom. Look what happens when I live in a reality which says, “I love you for who you are.” “I care about you without expecting something in return.” The relationship no longer becomes a commodity, some kind of exchange where I demand something in return. Look what happens with a love like that. I have been deeply moved to have people in my life who reveal this way for me. It is a gift. Perhaps it is a gift we can give to each other this season. A gift which shows itself along these shores. A gift which lights the whole sky.
