With no community support, a proposal to bring the American Wind
Symphony to Kincardine may have drifted away.
In committee-of-the-whole Dec. 17, mayor Larry Kraemer said he was
unable to secure any potential major local groups interested in helping
with this event. To bring the floating orchestra-on-a-barge to
Kincardine Harbour would cost a fee of $25,000 plus $5,000 for washroom
facilities and miscellaneous items.
At the Dec. 10 meeting, Kraemer urged council to support the event as a
unique summer attraction for Kincardine. He had been approached by the
orchestra's music director, Robert Austin Boudreau, who wanted to bring
the "short tall ship" to this area. Besides Kincardine, the symphony
would be stopping at Windsor, Sarnia and Sault Ste. Marie. The stop in
Kincardine would be around the third week of July, with the ship
arriving on the Wednesday, performing Thursday to Saturday and then
leaving Sunday.
"It would be a great opportunity," said Kraemer. "They would do a
concert around the harbour, plus they could do a concert at Knox
Presbyterian Church with the money going to community groups.

Boudreau does this to bring music to people who need
symphony. They go on a five-and-a-half-month voyage, providing a musical
adventure for the young people who take part."
Dec. 17, council agreed the event would be a great
attraction but wanted the cost to come from community groups not off the
tax rate. Kraemer said he could try contacting several more community
groups; otherwise, the proposal would go by the wayside.
"Short of somebody financing this, I don't think the municipality should
be bankrolling it," said councillor Kenneth Craig.
Deputy mayor Laura Haight agreed. "We have a lot to do in this
municipality and $30,000 is a lot of money for this year," she said.
"Unless it has a zero effect on the budget, I consider the matter
closed," said Kraemer.
