An extension to McLaren Street would run south from Highway 21
Kincardine councillor Randy Roppel says the municipality must forge
ahead with an extension to McLaren Street in Tiverton in order to boost
development in the village.
However, the rest of council disagrees, saying there is no rush to
extend the dead-end road that currently runs from Highway 21 north to
the Tiverton Sports Centre and the Tiverton fire hall. (next column)

In committee-of-the-whole earlier this month, Roppel
urged council to pursue the project because there is no guarantee in
five years, the municipality will be able to get an entrance off Highway
21.
"If we have an opportunity to provide a new entrance and
we are in favour of new development, we should do this," said Roppel.
"That dead-end street should have never been there. This street
should've been put in. It would solve a lot of problems in the village.
It's good planning to get the entrance permit and be ready to proceed
with the project."
He said the situation is no different than the municipality purchasing
land east of Highway 21 for development of the business park, or
building an extension of Mahood Johnston Drive from Saratoga Road to
Bruce Avenue.
Councillor Ron Hewitt said there is no rush to do this entrance. "Where
are you going to find the $20,000 (to pay for it), plus the land?" he
asked.
The municipality already owns land on the south end of the village which
it was planning to swap for the land to extend McLaren Street, said
chief building official Michele Barr. However, nothing can be done
pending the outcome of an Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) hearing into the
development. Beisel Contracting had proposed a 22-unit residential
complex near the McLaren intersection but that has been appealed to the
OMB.
Council agreed to shelve the McLaren Street extension project until the
municipality conducts its regular five-year review of the Official Plan.
