According to the developer at Monday night's Council meeting,
work on the new Rexall PharmPlus in Southampton is ready to go
as soon as weather permits, once Council has authorized the
project.
Even though the Site Plan Agreement was approved by the
Committee of the Whole on November 24th, 2008, there had been
outstanding items that had to be finalized and before the
project was to be approved, Councillor Diane Huber wanted some
questions answered.
She pointed out that this area is an entrance to the core of
Southampton and that some small adjustments to the landscaping
should be in order. Huber expressed her hope that the developer
would either try to incorporate some of the mature trees
existing on the lot or attempt to save them by moving them
elsewhere. "Our newer developments along the highway have
included a number of trees," she pointed out, "and I
respectfully ask that the this particular landscape strip along
the highway also include larger trees, particularly, since there
are no hydro lines there to impede their growth."

Huber also questioned whether or not the question of
sign height adjustment had been considered. "I know that the sign has
been reduced to 21 feet," she said, "but I also notice on the drawings,
a pole of some sort on the top of the roof and wondered if that was sign
related?" The developer confirmed that it was and that there would be
three large signs indicating the corporate name of Rexall.
Huber also expressed a recommendation that the bricks
from the factory be saved for recycling and wanted to know if a
demolition plan had been created for the materials. "Perhaps, the town
could consider using the bricks for a Fairy Lake improvement plan."
With a final comment, she also said that she hoped the issue of a
pedestrian access to the property from Adelaide Street had not been
forgotten.
At the end of the day and meeting, the By-law authorizing the Site Plan
Agreement was passed.
