(L) Mike Myatt & Brad Smith speak to Southampton's Propeller Club

Mike Myatt, Directory of Community Services for Saugeen Shores, and Brad Smith paid a visit to the Southampton Propeller Club on Wednesday, January 28th with a specific purpose in mind.

They were there to present a proposal for a new town logo. "With the town of Southampton," said Myatt, "what I've learned is that when you want something done you get hold of the the Propeller Club and their volunteers. It's remarkable the work that you do and, particularly in Pioneer Park."

Myatt explained that the Town began looking at logo designs approximately two and a half years ago. "We went to Town Council as a partner with Bruce Tourism to do something about signage in the region. Kincardine and Saugeen Shores are, in fact, the two test communities to come up with signage and we haven't looked at a logo since amalgamation."

Smith, who has only been in the area for two years, feels that he brings a fresh outlook which could be an advantage. "Graphically," he pointed out, "a logo is a representation of a group of people from every level - families, sometimes with a family crest, a community made up of those families, then a municipality, county, Province and, finally, a Nation."

According to Smith, there are several reasons to have a logo. "It creates a graphic identity that people can relate to. It instills a community price and sense of belonging and it also provides a strong identity for future marketing."

"When we looked at the logo design proposed for Southampton," he continued, "we knew it had to convey the character of Southampton but also be easily transferable to other media. It also has to be accepted by the citizens as well as being attractive and informative to tourists."

When the actual logo was unveiled, the many members in attendance appeared to immediately like it. The Chantry Island concept with lighthouse and keeper's house silhouetted against the sky with birds flying overhead seemed to catch the essence that many there felt was Southampton's main attraction. While most approved, there were also others who wanted to also see the motto "The Oldest Port on the Bruce Coast" incorporated.

The design will now move forward to Town Council and then to the signage designers, Corbin Design, to be incorporated into the signage strategy.
