Saugeen Shores is about to start the process of finding a new Town Councilor.

Jane Barber's resignation

Town Council

(continued)

Council decided at last night's (Mar. 9) meeting to begin the search for a new councilor to fill the position left open by former councilor, Jane Barber, who recently resigned in order to move to Alberta.

Instead of opting to hold a bi-election, council decided to choose its second option of appointing a councilor. The town will publically advertise for the position and any resident age 18 and older, who is a Canadian citizen and a resident/property owner in Saugeen Shores can apply.

Once applications are received by Town Clerk, Linda White, and qualifications are verified, the nominees will go before council with individual presentations, following which a vote will be taken by a show of hands.

Deputy Mayor Doug Frieburger does not agree that the 'show-of-hands' method is a true indication of a vote. "There are those who may be influenced by others votes and I think that votes should be by secret ballot." Apparently, under the Municipal Act however, the 'show-of-hands' vote is the preferred and legal method.

All submissions/applications are to be made to White at the Town offices by April 9th and, because a decision must be made within 60 days of the position becoming vacant, the decision will be made by May 8.
