The Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre was
recognized with an Award of Excellence on Thursday in Hamilton.
The Award was one of only five given out in the Province by the
Ontario Museum Association (OMA).
The Museum won the award for the uniqueness of its Wonders &
Wizardry family program and Queen of Fairy Lake initiative.
The initiative features a nature walking tour around Fairy Lake two
afternoons each summer. The tour integrates nature, pioneer and
aboriginal histories, the importance of stewardship of the
environment and the patterns that are found throughout nature as
they relate to everyday usage. It also ties into both the traveling
and permanent exhibits that are housed within the Museum.
The Award presentations took place at the new Hamilton Art Gallery
with curators and staffs from the various museums throughout the
province attending. The award recipients are chosen by a selection
committee and the Bruce County Museum was chosen after a video of
the nature tour was submitted to the OMA.
Receiving their Awards of Excellence from The Honourable Aileen
Carroll, Minister of Culture, Annemarie Hagan, Chair of the Awards
Committee, and Tammy Adkin, President of the OMA, were also the
following recipients:
- Daniel O'Brien - Recipient of the Award of Excellence for
"Lifetime Achievement"
The Ontario Ministry of Culture Museum Advisor will be recognized
for Lifetime Achievement, noting in particular, his extensive
volunteer committee work and commitment to provide guidance and
mentorship to
significant numbers of Museum Studies and Arts Management students
and culture program interns over the years. It is fitting that Mr.
O'Brien will be receiving his award in his native city of Hamilton.
