Museum reports to County Council

Heritage(continued)

Barbara Ribey, Curator and Director of the Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre, brought good news to County Council at its meeting held in Saugeen Shores' Town Chambers on Wednesday.

The meeting was held in Saugeen Shores due to renovations taking place in the Council's usual chambers in Walkerton.

In Ribey's report, she said that memberships are up substantially over the same time period for last year. January 1 - August 24, 2008, there were 226 memberships sold at $9,262 and for the same period this year, 2009, there have been 357 memberships sold for a total of $16,336. In addition, the gift shop revenue is up from $20,054 for January to August, 2008 to $30,764 for the same period this year.

Ribey also pointed out that the Wonderworks Wooly Mammoth exhibit in 2007 and the Dinosaur exhibit this year, 2009, have proven to be "blockbusters" when it comes to attendance. In keeping with the Wonderworks exhibits, she announced another for 2010, titled 'Ancient Sea Monsters' that includes six robotic sea creatures along with storyboards and hands-on activities for children. According to Ribey, "The exhibit is not only mythical but scientific. Few people realize that where we are now, in Bruce County, was once an inland sea and this exhibit will explain that."

The Museum has been moving forward in acquiring exhibits that are interactive with a view to attracting young and not-so-young audiences and Wonderworks robotics is helping to achieve that. Ribey also said that the Bruce County Museum is working at partnering with Grey Roots Museum & Archives with complementary programs.

Given the Museum's reputation and development in working with Wonderworks' robotic exhibits, Ribey has been able to negotiate a rental fee that is half of previous fees. "The momentum is in full swing," said Ribey, "and by bringing in another Wonderworks exhibit, we will continue to be in the forefront of exciting and affordable things to do when in Bruce-Grey."

Approval was given by Council for Ribey to go ahead with the procurement of the new exhibit for 2010.
