Mike Smith runs for Warden

Town Council

Saugeen Shores' Mayor Mike Smith has thrown his hat into the ring for County Warden to be decided in December.

The Warden's job is a huge commitment with approximately 300 meetings and events held throughout the year that he is expected to attend. He also takes on the positions of being head of County Council and Chair of Corporate Services Committee while retaining his own position of municipal Mayor.

"I realize that being County Warden requires a great deal of commitment and time," says Smith, "but I'm very fortunate to have a strong council that operates within the "Committee of the Whole" system. This allows for an effective and smooth-running municipal government. I also have, with Deputy Mayor Doug Freiburger, someone who can easily slip into the role of acting Mayor. So all in all, these are things that made my decision to run easier. "

Although it is Mayor Smith's first term as Mayor, he brings a wealth of municipal experience to the position having been Deputy Mayor for six years and a Councilor for 16 years before that.

Smith's predecessor, Mark Kramer, was elected twice as County Warden and the position is presently held by Mayor Bill Goetz of South Bruce.

The position of Warden is a one-year term and is an election by secret ballot to be held December 8 by the eight County Councilors at an open Council meeting in Walkerton. Smith is up against the only other candidate, Mayor Larry Kraemer of Kincardine.
