Mayor Smith has a Positive Outlook for 2009

Mayor Mike Smith

Mayor Mike Smith is pleased the way things shaped up in Saugeen Shores in 2008 and thinks the coming year looks good.

"I know that there's an economic downturn, but I really feel we are going to weather it just fine here is this region," he says.

Many projects were undertaken in 2008, such as the much-needed Port Elgin library addition, the new medical clinic to appeal to doctor recruitment and the pumping station on the 10th of Bruce. "We were also one of only 11 communities that got funding for connecting link infrastructure which allowed us to widen Goderich Street through to the Independent intersection," he points out. "In addition, the new water intake off Southampton's shore will enable us to get rid of the Port Elgin plant."

Mayor Smith credits the day-to-day operations of the town to the staff. "They are simply one of the best staffs anywhere. We are looked up to by other municipalities because of their hard work and commitment."

While there were some contentious issues in 2008, such as Bag Tags and development charges, Smith reaffirms that they were needed. "Every community has development charges and developers expect them. The implementation of them did not slow down development as many thought they would. Also, the Bag Tags have made a difference in landfill usage since they were started and, again, we had to think of the landfill site and how to preserve the capacity that's there. As it is, we only have 12 years or so left and will have to begin to seriously consider what's to be done."

As for 2009, Smith is confident that the area will continue to develop. "Things may slow down a bit because of the overall economy, but I think it's going to be a good year. The Women's House will begin Second Stage Housing construction and we've been approved for some affordable housing and that's one thing I am really in support of. Also, the County is going to come through with repairs to the Millcreek Bridge and, hopefully, the Business Improvement Committee working with downtown retailers will make a difference to Port Elgin's downtown area."

The current Town Council is now halfway through its four-year term. Asked if he will put his name forward again at election time, Mayor Smith smiled, "Probably. I really enjoy being Mayor and this has always been my home. My wife was born and raised here too and I feel a deep commitment to the town and its residents."
