Kraemer running for warden of Bruce County

Kincardine Council

Mayor Larry Kraemer

Kincardine mayor Larry Kraemer is running for the position of Bruce County warden against Saugeen Shores mayor Mike Smith.

"Kincardine hasn't had a warden since amalgamation," says Kraemer. "We're the biggest municipality in the county that hasn't had our representative serve as warden, while other municipalities have had their representative serve two or three times."

On a personal note, he says his grandfather was warden in 1966 and two of his uncles have been on county council but nobody else has served since then. "I'd like to be the next warden of Bruce County," he says.

"I've served the people of this county in my business and through my volunteer work for more than 20 years," he says. "I believe I have the qualifications to do a good job. I'm the most experienced county councillor yet to have the opportunity to serve as warden. I hope to get the support from the others on county council."

The position carries a certain amount of influence, says Kraemer, but also a lot of responsibility as the warden attends about 300 meetings and events throughout the one-year term.

He expects to depend more on his colleagues on Kincardine council, particularly the deputy mayor, to pick up the slack. "The job of warden will not be any harder for me than for anybody else," he says.

County council will elect its 2010 warden in a vote by secret ballot in December.
