Lighthouse Leaves for its new home at Vaughn Mills Mall outside of Toronto

Chris Hughes checks the straps that will hold the lighthouse secure (note the shrink wrap)

August 1, 2008 A new lighthouse exhibit left Southampton today for Vaughan Mills Mall outside of Toronto, where it will be permanently on display.

Chris Hughes, with Bruce County Tourism, was asked by Mall administration staff if a lighthouse exhibit could be provided to be housed within the mall.  Hughes, in turn, approached the Propellor Club, an arm of the Marine Heritage Society in Southampton, to enquire if they would be interested in taking on the project.

The group, made up of retired professionals from various trades, including carpentry, electrical and metal work, readily agreed.

After hundreds of man-hours, the 15 1/2 ft. working lighthouse built to scale, left Thursday for its new home, where it will represent Bruce County and the Huron coast with its several lighthouses.

Going with Hughes for the installation were Bob Trelford, Gord Webb, Rick Schumacher and Peter Haskey of the Propeller Club.

Lighthouse top replica to house a 'beacon' light

Note: The Lighthouse represents Bruce County Tourism and is a great marketing idea.  It is based upon the well known Bruce County Tourism logo and also the 'Big Tub' range light.
