Lately I have been wondering about how much life longs to control.  If I can have some control over my life, then somehow things will be okay.  If I knew what was wrong with me, then I'd be able to do something about it.  If my children or grandchildren would just do what I say, then things would go much smoother.  If people would just learn to get along together, we could have some peace in the world.

I'm aware these days how much isn't able to be controlled.  The financial market is one that offers daily reminders.  The fragile nature of the global economy also comes to mind and its growing effect on millions of people.

Then there is our body.  There are ways we can influence our health and our body but sometimes things happen beyond our control:  an illness emerges, a fall, an accident occurs, surgery becomes necessary.

It is also true that while our relationships can be influenced by words and actions, ultimately we do not control our friends and family.  Some days I wish I could, and I know some days they wish they could with me too!

Life seems to be about the gradual growth toward letting go.  Loosening our grip.  Stepping back.  Taking a breath or two or thirty seven.  Living with open hands is a difficult way to choose.  It remains a choice to make over and over again.  More opportunities to cling and try to control will present themselves, sometimes on a daily basis.  And yet, life's challenge and invitation takes us down another road, one that is travelled in freedom, with lightness and with open hands.
