Thank you for recognizing the efforts & talents of our local artists. We truly appreciate the support :) Sharon Pike September 2, 2010
The police and ambulance were seen at
about 1pm today, I had heard that an enebriated person
had fallen down the rocks and cut themselves. I
wasn't able to confirm that, it just seemed unusual to
see emergency vehicles out on the dock by the range
light. I didn't even know they could get out there. September 2, 2010 As the parent of a special needs child
who has been buddied this summer by many of the young
teens in the article, I would like to say how much the
parents of the special needs children appreciate the
volunteer hours put in by these young men and women.
Without them, the summer would not have been as
successful for many of the children as it was, including
some children who would have otherwise not been able to
attend and be integrated as much as they were. My son
had a wonderful summer, and there were some days that
this was due in no small part to the buddy and other
volunteers within his group. Thanks to them all for all
their hard work! It is incredibly appreciated. August 24, 2010 Thank you Sandy for posting the Saugeen
Shores Relay For Life News Article…
August 24, 2010 August 23, 2010 August 23, 2010 Your question is very unhappily worded
because, as far as I know, no one is advocating the
reduction of "dunes" plural. What the Southampton
Residents Association (SRA) is advocating on behalf of
its members on Harmer St is that one large dune be
lowered as contemplated by Geoff Peach's 2006 report
commissioned by the SRA. One of the reasons it can and
should be lowered is that it is far higher than
necessary to perform its function of preventing sand
loss even at the highest water level. August 22, 2010 August 21, 2010 August 20, 2010 Gladys Micks got it right. "It will be a shame if the mayor and council get away with this." This little beautiful place is not some thing to be auctioned off to a corporation or petty interference from council. Leave the signs alone please. This is my town Pete August 19, 2010 August 18, 2010 August 17, 2010 August 16, 2010 GREAT photographs telling a great story Michael Crossling Editor: See August 15, 2010 August 14, 2010 August 12, 21010 August 11, 2010 August 9, 2010 Dear Sandy, Thank you so much for your article
on the Southampton Arts Society'sShilling Experience opening,
pictures and commentary. Your constant support of the Arts
in Saugeen Shores is very much appreciated. Hope to see
you this weekend at the Sauble show. August 9, 2010 Sandy, August 7, 2010 August 7, 2010 August 4, 2010 I was stunned that "Council" was taking such a poor approach to a very sensitive issue. It is my understanding that "Council Members" are elected to serve taxpayer interests. The communication of this "by-law" appears to have been intentionally stifled. Why was there no opportunity for business owners to present their side of this important issue? After spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on signs why are owners being forced to remove all of them. Does "Council" not realize that advertising brings in business; which you need in a tourist town. Would a better approach not be to clean up any shrubs, weeds, etc. around the signs to make them more presentable. I always felt Southampton to be a tourist destination which requires signs directing people to various locations. Take them away and a lot of your drivers (especially seniors) will have difficulty finding Motels or other attractions. I live in Kitchener and we have all kinds of signs everywhere; why remove them in Southampton? I truly hope that "Council" reconsiders their poor decision, and I encourage the "small business owners" not to give up their fight. Keep this "signage" issue a "hot button" topic before the Public and "Council". Borys Malko Kitchener Visitor Editor: See article below:
August 4, 2010 I must agree with Marie on this sign bylaw. It is OK for the town to collect the huge dollar in taxes from a business such as Cedar Court Motel. Ask her to support all the local Charitees, Fund Raisers etc yet ask her to remove a few signs spread on the outskirts of the town I feel is simply uncalled for. Has anyone thought to even ask the tourists or the visitors to your town their opinion on these signs? I, as a would be vacationer in your town am attracted by all the Glimmer, Bling and Signage with lights that an attraction has to offer. You could say it gives it that Hollywood or Vegas feel. Take Grand Bend for example......Signage....tons of it.....Tourists......tons of them. I believe not only does a place like Cedar Court benefit from these signs but benefit is realized by the whole town. People like myself travel from town to town untill something attracts them to stick around for awhile. Be it a Museum, Accommodations, Food, Beaches, whatever. Keep these people in town even a little bit longer and they will spend money. Money that is invested back into the town. If I don't stumble across a reason to stay in that town, such as I don't know where the nearest Motel is or where is the closest Gas station, I'll move on, driving to the next town that maybe has a sign up or attraction that makes me want to stay there a little while longer. What about the possible other benefits such as those people in a hurry going nowhere too fast. Speeding drivers travelling through the town endangering others in their path on the highways. Is it possible some of these idiots may slow down just a little to read the signs....because they do need food, gas, a place to stay overnight or maybe just a reason to slow down in your community. Roger Vandendriessche, Simcoe. Ontario Editor: See article below:
August 4, 2010 August 3, 2010 Excellent article about "signage". I don't think this is helping. This talk
about progress has got to change. The future is now. Get rid of
this silly by-law. It hurts people and don't forget there is a
council election coming up August 3, 2010 Hi, Liz. August 3, 2010 i read this article .i understand the owners point of view ,i have visit in southhampton ,and the sign took me to cedar court ,the motel was close to everything i needed to visit this beautiful town ,so please think twice about taking this down ,the owners are so good and make there customers feel at home ,they give a personal touch ,that leaves you leaving southampaton you want to come back again ,so this gives business too other town business staying at the motel ,the town is a team i feel when i visit southhampton ,the signs direct the tourits where to go ,so i feel your making a wrong decision and will regret taking these signs down ,you want to make it look better cut the grass around the signs then everything looks neater thats all that needs ,well i live in simcoe and enjoy southhampton ,remember business brings finaces and money in the town ,so who ever is in charge wake up ,pick on sonmething elese ,well i wish you all the best thank you for letting me make my opinion yours truly Joanne Sicard simcoe Editor: Letter refers to the article below: August 3, 2010 If the town council gets its way, any new people who come to this town will have a very hard time finding anything they may need. For the people who already live here, they will have the same problem. For the Love of God, don't be so stupid. The
time's now, are tough enough. Leave it alone. Editor: Letter refers to the article below: August 3, 2010 I just read this article and I'm horrified by
what has been happening to Southampton over the years! We have
been vacationing there since I was a little kid, following the
tradition of my parents and grandparents. The last time we were
there was August 2006 and have not been able to make it back due
to my daughter's medical problems. However we will finally be
able to vacation in Southampton next week after many stressful
years. Although I'm looking forward to our vacation, I'm also a
bit nervous about the changes that I will see. I'm trying to get
away from the stress and 'big town' life. I'm looking to
vacation in our quaint little Southampton....yet I feel that I'm
going to see a shopping mall on the corner! The last few years I
get comments from my brother about all the changes that have
taken place. When will it be enough? Now you want to hit the
'small guys' and take their signs down? Come on! How will people
ever find these businesses? I've told my family that I will go
this year as I need to get away, but if I'm not even going to
recognize the town, I will save my money and find a new vacation
spot elsewhere. Please, please, don't take away the charm from
this beautiful town! Editor: Letter refers to the article below:
Hi Editor: We assume it is the letter below is the letter in question. August 1, 2010 When it comes to wind energy, it appears that health concerns are not unique to Ontario. A recent article in the New York Times, illustrates that it is also an ongoing problem as far away as Oregon. It appears that some of the same complaints regarding hearing, nausea and dizziness have also become issues at other geographical locations.\ For more information: Click here John Goemans July 29, 2010 Looks like the Saugeen Chamber has to get their full time hired staff to management training. Lots of cash, tax payer and business money involved. They will be in audit mode for some time to come. Kind of sad. Port Elgin Editor: See

July 19, 2010 One monstrous way to SPRUCE the BRUCE is to move
all the proposed Bluewater Wind Turbines to east of Highway 21.
Lake Range Road is just about built to the maximum on the west
side from Kincardine to the 6th Concession of Huron-Kinloss
Township. The next obvious location for more residential
development is the east side of Lake Range Road. If the proposed
Bluewater Wind Farm is allowed to position wind turbines so
close to Lake Range Road no future residential development will
be possible. A great loss of not only tax revenue to the
township but also a loss of potential revenue to the farmers
that own the land along the east side of Lake Range Road. July 16, 2010 I was just the victim of a heinous robbery at my
letter box ! Opened a hydro bill and a sewer/water bill and was
mugged by their contents. After giving up more money from my
wallet, I realized this was all perpetrated by an elected
government. Since election, the NO TAX platform has heaped taxes
upon us, taxes upon those taxes, created taxes under different
names (health premium, lottery ticket increases, HST, etc.) and
politely sent out expensive brochures that you would need a
lawyer, accountant, and engineer to decode for you as they try
to explain that you are NOT being robbed. I survived this latest
robbery, but I don't know how many more I can handle. Maybe the
local constabulary could stake out the postal system, prevent
this in the future, and detain those responsible ? July 15, 2010 This is very tragic and sad-there are usually
thousands of baby gulls in the bays at Chantry in June and
July-so many that you have to protect yourself from the
attacking parent gulls. I am a tour guide and was stunned to see
the devastating effect of this intervention this year. There are
2 baby gulls-as in the photos submitted by Carol and no gulls in
the bays. And yes--the cormorants are thriving even better this
year!! Since it is a bird sanctuary, it is odd that the Ministry
is taking no action. July 11, 2010

their paddles. Their tandem kayak had swamped. He rescued them

July 3, 2010 Yes, Carol Michell , you're right about jobs and prosperity moving to other places, like hiring more people in government to chase the working man for taxes and whatever else you can take , police to fight with the protesters that are trying to send you a message to stop stealing our money from us and wasting it on stupidity like the G-20,etc,etc. Gordon Dickinson

July 3, 2010 Dear Liz, During my research for the FOTKH I came across this website for "Niagara at Large"with this excellent article (Dated 12th May 2010) by writer Doug Draper on the New OHA By-Laws, which will effectively "Gag" all doctors from speaking publicly under penalty of having hospital privileges withdrawn (Dr Lisa Roth!). Could it be, that SBGHC CEO Paul Davies in his lofty position as an OHA Board Member & Treasurer of the OHA, has been actively pushing for this particular change in the OHA by-laws?? We can only surmise!. Doug Draper makes some very good points and there are excellent comments at the end from members of the public. Regards, July 2, 2010 Bike / Hiking Path : PRIDE TURNS TO ANGER. Why was this not done in April and May, not the end of June and a complete mess on July 1st. Holiday weekend ? Why did it involve removing the whole roadway, including portions just totally re-paved 2 years ago? Most visitors take this drive as a part of their Saugeen Shores experience yet the road is essentially closed. Constant dust, pot holes and prolonged construction during peak vacation period. The portions of the path which are paved now are
being used without any instructions. I have witnessed
pedestrians startled by cyclists coming up to them from behind
at high speeds. I've seen dogs being walked or running besides
bikes with long leashes and getting tangled into walkers. Has
any of this been thought out? July 2, 2010

June 29, 2010 Hello, I was watching the You Tube video about the "obtuse drivers" in Kincardine last night. My car was not one of the ones caught on tape, but this still bothers me a little. I think that if someone has the nerve to photograph people, call them names and single them out show licence plates and faces, they should be responsible enough to put their name to it. I feel it is cowardly to sneak around and not put your name to it. Please feel free to contact this "source" and have them add their name if they believe that they are the law, or don't bother publishing any more crap. Perry Johns Editor: See
June 28, 2010 What were the three levels of government thinking? Do they not remember Seattle , Quebec City and the other venues where these hoods have spread a path of terror, with their mindless acts of destruction! Millions of dollars spent on security including 5000 police officers and was it effective? These cowards marched with the peaceful
protesters, committed their dastardly deeds , changed their
attire and were lost in the crowd! Shame on these hooligans! The
next meeting of the mighty should be staged on a boat. It will
not only save the taxpayers loads of monies but also give these
anarchists a choice to either sink or swim! June 26, 2010 The G8 protests in Toronto-- What a confused mess. Genuine protesters and anarchists, silly people, smart folks, druggies, nutters and some out for a weekends riot. I read Ian Rankins Naming of the Dead a while back. It refers to the the G8 in Edinborough. A similar story. protesters vs police. It would appear if they did this gig in one place, the same place each time, It would save a $ or a $billion each time plus a lot of disruption. An island somewhere which is out of reach to the nonsense crowd. Did somebody mention Alcatraz ? This is silly as of right now. Pete June 25, 2010 What an interesting article. In many countries it is. Individuals can listen to every thing the cops discuss. And do.your burglars probably made a decision after hearing that the local constabulary were on their way to investigate a "pot grow lot". At the same time the Pot growers, listening in on their scanner, packed their tools and headed out. June 1, 2010 To the Editor, Editor: Red and Green flashing lights are common on aircraft, spacecraft and ships. The red is by law on the port side and the green on the starboard side. This is common and is seen often on clear nights. On aircraft it appears as a strobe effect and this is probably what you saw. We lost one female swan last year. She was 'on the nest' and it was thought that she was attacked by a larger animal, such as a fox, as her eggs were also destroyed. The male swan remains ... although we are sure, very lonely. May 28, 2010 Hi: Yesterday's issue of the Kingston Whig Standard carried a warning about a noxious weed called "Wild Parsnip," which has invaded eastern Ontario and northern New York. The description of the toxic effects of this weed is very similar to that of the Hogweed, so, after some checking, I found that this weed, along with the familiar Wild Carrot, or Queen Anne's Lace, is a relative of the Giant Hogweed. I thought it an interesting coincidence that the article appeared so soon after your's on the Hogweed. I am originally a farm boy from Bruce County (many years ago,) but I don't recall ever seeing this plant. I assume it has arrived in recent years, uninvited, from some exotic location. March 26, 2010 Hi, I just wanted to make a comment on your article in regards to the May 24 weekend yard sales. The picture of the yard sale on the bottom (Kingsway Street) was actually my home. We were doing a fundraiser for Neuroblastoma Research which is a cancer that occurs in children. My cousin, Nathaniel Hudson, was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma last year and has been going through numerous surgeries, chemotherapy, and now radiation treatments. He just turned 3 years old. All of the proceeds are going to “The James Fund” in Nate’s name. I am happy to report that we raised just over $1500! I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped with the yard sale from organizing, setting up tables, bringing their own donations, manning the tables, and contributing to the cause in every way imaginable. We were overwhelmed by the response, and can’t thank everyone enough for contributing to this worthy cause. Together we can make a difference and find a cure. Thank you to everyone for your support.

Andrea La Blance May 11, 2010 Pharmacists have tried in the past to address the waste in the system but the Government never seems to get the point. Annually ,thousands upon thousands of dollars of unused drugs are returned to the stores by customers for disposal. Co-pays were put in by the government to encourage some responsibility by the public to not perceive drugs as free and that there was some personal cost involved. But many Pharmacies waved the fee negating what many considered as a deterrent to waste. Pharmacies should not have been allowed to wave the fee. This would have made the public more responsible and put money into the health system. W. Wardrop May 10, 2010 Thank you very much for taking this picture! What went wrong with energy in Ontario by Keith Stelling
April 22, 2010 The Town Staff pulled up in front of my house and repaired damage done over the winter to the lawn. They planted grass and added top soil. What a great place to live. Thanks! Southampton resident April 21, 2010 I read, with interest, the report from Huron-Kinloss Township that the tax levy in the township would increase by 5.1%. The average residential assessment is $218,362. and that the tax bill for this average would be $1,029.76. This is for a year round resident, who may, or may not, have someone in school, has road care, including snow removal, etc.
This is quite a comparison to the seasonal shoreline resident who only
requires a small percentage of the year round services, many on their
own roads, and, obviously does not need school support but still has an
assessment of over double the residential rate and, in many cases, pays
over $6.000. annually in property taxes. This does not appear to be an
even balance of the tax bill for part time residents as compared to
those that enjoy the benefits of year round support from Huron-Kinloss
Township. At last check, the shoreline covers the larger percentage of
the Huron-Kinloss taxes but many only reside in the township for less
than half the year.

Rural patients on the hook in fight with pharmacists
April 18, 2010 Fighting for more docs in rural areas? Nonsense it is control. I vote with my brain not my party affiliation. The Medical profession is the best union in Canada. They control who, when, and how many Docs we have in the Canadian "system" In Southampton they have a clinic and don't need to hang out the shingle. They are not Einsteins they are are people with control. Pete April 16, 2010
Police 9 % hike over 3 years. Pete Editor: See April 15, 2010 In reference to the so called "Spring Clean Up day" on June 5th. What happens to the people that will not be in town on that day ? Unfortunately they will miss out. In the past when these clean up days were held, it was total pandemonium at the landfills sites. long line ups and of course the sites are only open for a half of day. Why doesn't council issue each householder a free pass day at the householders choosing to get rid of their collected spring items. This way people could go at a day when it is convenient to them. This would save all the lineups and having the town employees in on overtime (at taxpayers expense).
I suggested this via e-mail awhile back to the town works manager, town
clerk and the mayor but had no response from any of them. I guess us
taxpayers just don't rate. April 15 2010

Millions against
Monsanto this company is the stuff science fiction is made of. Editor see April 13, 2010 I agree with Ken Texmo that the garbage pick up in Kincardine should be left alone. What about elderly people, are they now expected to drag their garbage across a slippery street? Or Kids whose job it is to put out the garbage for allowance are now forced to cross the road? I don't think so. As for the garbage tax, I put a letter in the news a couple of months ago before this came into effect. Perhaps more letters like mine and Ken's would make them think twice. But , we all just took it and now they are going to push even harder. Kincardine needs to say enough on the cuts, use some of the reserve money, and stop with projects that most people in town are not interested in! Perry Johns Editor: See letter below and you're always welcome to send us your comments. We have the most in depth and widest circulation in the area. April 12, 2010 April 11, 2010 DDT and Agent Orange were all Monsanto products. They have bought companies to "take the blame" for their own liabilities to avoid responsibilities and loss of profit. March 27, 2010 Isn't it interesting that this Union biased article should come from the town where the CAW has it's headquarters. I've been involved with INCO Nickel for over 30 years as a user and seller for Metallurgical uses. Several strikes in Sudbury over the years created global shortages which drove the prices from $ 4.00 / lb to over $ 30.00 / lb. in USD and no one in those Unions turned down the bonuses they negotiated based on the price. C.V.R.D. in Brazil will not cave in like our weak kneed Auto Industry and these strikers had better face reality. Their wages and benefits are already superior to 75 % of other hard working Canadians. Put those wages and jobs up for hire and they will not
last long. These workers have put their families and the town through
hell because they are like sheep following Union leaders who are still
taking home a very lucrative package. Robert Greason Editor: Please see

March 8, 2010 Thank you Liz for your great, and complete coverage of the meeting on Saturday. I am pleased ( and flattered by the inclusion of my presentation.) However, I did give the wrong date to Natalie (probably I misunderstood the question) The Ontario Hospital Services Commission was created in 1958 or 9 and was taken out of business in 1971 or 2. In its place the MINISTRY was formed to ostensibly provide some POLITICAL input to the services etc. I remember that on the day following the
establishment of the Ministry, I placed a call to Murray Gaunt Lib. MPP.
- introducing myself and advising him that he would be hearing from me
(about the Hospital and its services regularly). He, and I believe
Murray Elston were very supportive. Ian L Mitchell March 7, 2010

elusive. Editor: Building permits are up. See the article below.
March 3, 2010 Re the new Minster of
Agriculture, Carol Mitchell. Oh my goodness, said a So get over the housing for women and kids [ I agree with it entirely ] and get back to what you won't have a clue about. Before any one knocks me for being a chauvinist pig, I appointed the first female sales rep in a crown corporation in Canada. I was told to fire her. After a dozen calls she advised me she didn't have a license to drive and the 'old man' was driving her around. I didn't fire her. Get your license quick I sez. She did. She'd earned it. The job, won it. A great, smart woman. Pete

February 25, 2010 The two winners for the Rotary Weekly
Draw are: Sheila Thompson of Paisley and Elliott Rutherford of
Southampton. February 25, 2010 Just heard on the local radio station that there are HST Seminars being presented in our area at different locations. Obviously the Federal and Ontario Governments are pressing ahead with this crippling tax even though thousands of petitions from Ontario taxpayers, and howls of outrage from opposition members, have been presented to them from all constituents. This will be devastating to lower income families, pensioners, and even most middle income families as they realize the burden this will become as it is applied to all ESSENTIAL items. The estimate the other day in the media was a minimum of $225.00 per annum for heat and hydro alone. God forbid if you have to buy gasoline with yet another TAX levied upon it. I guess we will all know what the Middle
Age feudal serfs felt like as the Kings, Earls, and Barons, all hammered
them mercilessly for more taxes. Or will the point be reached in the not
too distant future February 22, 2010 Hi Editor: for background see

My personal experience of having my two daughters getting E.coli made a direct hit. I have always suspected the contamination being from the lake water, and now recent scientific testing is proving my suspicions ( google E.coli in Great Lakes). What concerned me was the attitude I received from the Public Water Works based out of Owen Sound. I never felt my concerns were heard or taken seriously - even after stating that 12 other children swimming in the same area had shown similar symptoms. Thankfully there is a local committee attempting to develop a plan for the Port Elgin Beach. Included in this plan are measures to stop the growth of E.coli on the beach. I do feel this is only the beginning of a huge problem facing the Great Lakes. Increased awareness is the key. Thank you again.
