Latest Update on Lake Huron Water Levels March 16, 2008

Most recent forecasts for Lake Huron water levels this year continue to indicate low water levels throughout the spring and into the summer.

Expected water levels for March are 576.7 feet, nine inches below chart datum, 21 inches below the average for this time of year, and five inches below the same period last year.

The water level has, however, risen one inch in the past four weeks, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Detroit District.

The latest measurements show levels 21 inches below the long-term average for March, 53 inches below the high set in 1986 and eight inches above the record low set in 1964.

Lake Superior is seven inches above last year, Erie is at the same level and Ontario is two inches above last year.

The engineers issued this alert:

"Lake Superior and Lake Michigan-Huron are below chart datum and forecasted to remain below datum through June and May, respectively. Ice buildup in the connecting channels can cause short-term water level fluctuations. User of the Great Lakes, connecting channels and St. Lawrence River should keep informed of current conditions before undertaking any activities that could be affected by changing water levels."
