Kuhl Machine Shop (KMS) celebrates 20 years

From a garage on the family farm in Keady, Bruce County, Dave Kuhl has taken a small welding business and turned it into an enterprise - KMS Inc.

This year, Kuhl Machine Shop, celebrates its 20th Anniversary.

With over 15,000 square feet of workspace, each welder has his own area and combined with a complete computerized system throughout, KMS is able to design and complete projects of any size. The shop is highly organized with a place for everything and everything in its place and scrupulously clean.

"I've approached this much like mixed farming," Kuhl explains, "it's all about diversifying."
With CNC lathes and CNC Plasma Cutter, a full paint shop, milling machines and welders, KMS has developed a reputation for quality, regardless of the job. Kuhl, himself, has triple trade status of Industrial Millwright, Master Machinist and Certified Welder.

"People come from all over for our expertise," adds Kuhl, "expecially when they have something that is a little out of the ordinary or a small job that no one else will do. We do very high precision and high tolerance machining."

So precise is their work, that KMS provides all the test plates that are sent to the Canadian Welding Bureau and throughout the United States. "To manufacture the plates," Kuhl points out, "we had to design and build our own robotic welder."

KMS is one of the most highly certified companies with the International Standards Organization (ISO) 9001:2000 and was, in fact, recognized as one of Canada's top 100 companies.

Today, the company supports industries such as nuclear energy, natural resources, manufacturing, agriculture, automotive, mining and marine among many others. "Today, we are very involved with the Bruce Power nuclear rebuild," Kuhl says.

While they may be involved with supplying parts to a nuclear energy corporation, Dave Kuhl, President and CEO, still meets everyone who comes through the door with a request for a specialized item.

Kuhl Machine Shop (KMS) will be holding an OPEN HOUSE in September, 2009 to celebrate their 20th year and Dave Kuhl says, "We hope everyone can join us. We're gearing up for a great time!"
