Residents gathered to recognize Bob Appell's gift of a Canadian flag and flagpole

Veteran Bob Appell also presented the Port Elgin United Church with a flagpole and Canadian flag

Kingsway Arms of Elgin Lodge in Port Elgin received a special Canada Day gift from one of its residents.

Bob Appell, a World War II veteran and resident at the Lodge, felt that the residence lacked one thing - a flag. "We live in a wonderful country," he said, "and there are veterans and the wives of veterans living here and I absolutely felt that a Canadian flag should be flying here."

Appell served in the Canadian Army's Argyle Highland Sutherland's 4th Division in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany, where he was wounded.

For More

Although Appell never got back to Europe for the 60th and 65th anniversary celebrations held in Holland and France, like others who couldn't make the trip, he received a very special honour. "The Dutch Legion of Hamilton awarded to all of us who couldn't make the Liberation of Holland celebrations, the Dutch Freedom Medal," said Appell, "and that meant a lot to us."

When Appell returned from overseas, like other service men, it was difficult to find employment. "One of the very few companies that would employ veterans," he explains, "was Carling Breweries. They took in all the veterans, including those who came home physically handicapped so I can't say enough good things about that company."

Appell finally ended his working career as an Investment Broker and, today, has his own apartment at Kingsway Arms.
