Kincardine council has given initial approval to the revised taxi bylaw presented in committee-of-the-whole Wednesday night (Nov. 11).

The original draft bylaw was presented in July but council didn't like the requirements for a safety check every six months and that the vehicles could not be over 10 years old.

Clerk Donna MacDougall said the bylaw went back to the police services board and it has agreed that an annual safety check will do, but the board maintains the vehicle age at no more than 10 years old.

"Can someone justify to me why there is a maximum age for a taxi vehicle?" asked councillor Kenneth Craig. "I think that's too restrictive."

"The mileage on a taxi is more than a residential vehicle," said councillor Marsha Leggett. "Things can go wrong which don't show up at the annual inspection. Ten years on the road is enough, then the vehicle is replaced. Personally, if we go with what council wants and there's a problem, council is responsible. This recommendation is coming from the police services board. It's a matter of public safety and the public puts its trust in us."

"Any vehicle can be pulled and checked at any age if the police believe it's necessary," said councillor Gordon Campbell.

The committee approved the bylaw which will come to council for final approval at the Nov. 18 meeting.
