Kincardine applies for grant to build gymnasium at Davidson Centre

Kincardine Council

(continued)

Kincardine council may be putting yet another addition on the Davidson Centre.

In committee-of-the-whole Wednesday (May 20), council agreed to submit a grant under the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program to build a gymnasium, dressing rooms, equipment rooms, and a warm viewing area on the northeast side of the building. The cost is estimated at $2.9 million, with Kincardine on the hook for one-third of that, and the remainder coming from the federal and provincial governments.

Recreation director Karen Kieffer told council that the grant program is designed to help upgrade recreational facilities. Preferred projects are ones that would not have been built without support from the grant, and must be completed by March 31, 2011. Deadline for applications is May 29.

Councillor Guy Anderson, who chairs the recreation committee, said this is the number one recreation project, just as it was during earlier discussions about submissions for other grant programs. "We'll lose one row of parking, but the lot can be extended toward the water tower to actually increase parking," he said.

"I like getting money from other levels of government," said councillor Mike Leggett, "but I don't like adding on to that old recreation centre. It's like throwing good money after bad."

"A new recreation facility would be 20 years down the road," said Anderson.
"But there will be no room for a second ice pad if we build this addition," argued Leggett. "I hate stifling what we could have there."

Anderson said with better co-operation between Kincardine and Huron-Kinloss, there could be better sharing of ice time so that three ice pads are available - in Kincardine, Tiverton and Ripley.

Council later approved applying for the gymnasium project.
